Welling United v Weymouth preview

Floodlight football returns to Park View Road on Tuesday evening in a rearranged fixture when Welling United host Weymouth in the Vanarama National League South.

Rod Stringer’s Wings have had a mixed time since the original due date with a four game undefeated run followed by three losses. They did not play on Saturday as their scheduled opponents, Hampton and Richmond Borough, were in F.A. Trophy action.

Their last game was on New Year’s Day when they visited Maidstone United. The Wings looked to be frustrating the team who are leading the form guide until Aaron Blair scored with twenty-one minutes remaining. Maidstone did not create much after that but snuffed out any Welling attacks and claimed all three points.

There are only four teams below Welling, but one of them is their Tuesday night visitors Weymouth, who are nine points below the Wings in bottom place. They were knocked out of the Trophy on Saturday at home to Boreham Wood. It was goal-less at half time but goals by new signing Matt Rush and substitute Jon Benton put the visitors in control and Andreas Robinson’s strike in stoppage time was no more than a consolation.

Although, it has been a tough season for the Terras, they have a decent away record having won two, drawn four and lost six (they are yet to win at home). The two wins came at Dorking Wanderers and Aveley.

When Welling hosted Weymouth last season, it was the penultimate game of the season in April, The match was a pretty uneventful encounter with no goals but the point Welling earned was enough to guarantee their safety.

Further interest will come from the fact that there will be a familiar face in the away team dug-out as former Welling manager, Warren Feeney, was appointed in a similar role at Weymouth in December. Since taking over, the Terras have drawn all three of their league matches, with two nil-nils on their travels.

Some are describing this match as a ‘six-pointer’ which, of course, it isn’t as no promotion or relegation issues have ever been decided in January. However, the result could have an effect on confidence and momentum so there is a lot at stake.
