Following a weekend with no weekend competitive action Welling United return to league action when they entertain Weston-super-Mare.
Their last Vanarama National League South game was a 1-1 draw at home to Wealdstone. They started slowly and paid the cost when going behind to the visitors’ only real chance in the first half.
In the second half they were more positive but didn’t really lift the tempo until the last twenty minutes. Danny Mills levelled on ninety minutes and had there been a further five minutes following the injury time, Welling might well have gone on to win the match.
That left Welling in second place in the league, but almost every other team in the division has played one if not two more games since then and the Wings now sit in fourth place with games in hand.
However, they have not been idle while out of league action and have won a London Senior Cup tie 2-0 at Corinthian-Casuals and drawn 2-2 in a behind closed doors friendly with Millwall. As a result, some of the injured players and others, who have been on the bench and short of action, have got some playing time in their legs and can now increase manager Steve King’s options.
In the corresponding fixture in April last season, Welling cruised to a comfortable 3-1 victory to keep their outside hopes of reaching the play-offs alive. It took just eight minutes for Olumide Durojaiye to put them ahead.
Bradley Goldberg saw an overhead kick that would have been a contender for goal of the season crash back off the post before Jack Parkinson headed home from a Ryan Hall corner. Jarrad Welch reduced the arrears ten minutes after the break with a spectacular long range effort but two minutes later Jack Jebb restored Welling’s two goal advantage.
As hard as Weston tried to get back into the game, they reduced to trying their luck from distance and didn’t really threaten to get back into the game.
A few weeks ago, this would have looked to be a straight-forward game but the Seagulls have gone three league games undefeated so it could be an entertaining tussle.
