Two points from four games has as good as finished Welling United’s play-off hopes.
However, it’s not over until it’s over and they will still be looking to beat Weston-super-Mare on Saturday in the hope that the teams above them collapse. It would need to be spectacular though as Welling are seven points behind with three to play.
This will be the third meeting between the two clubs this season with them having won one apiece.
When Welling visited Woodspring Park in September, they claimed an excellent 2-0 win. On seventeen minutes, Welling went ahead. Connor Dymond won a tackle in midfield that sent Eli Phipps away and he fired beyond Luke Purnell from twenty yards.
Then just after the half hour mark, Welling scored again. Jeffrey Monakana put over a brilliant cross that Joe Healy met to head home at the far post.
Former Wing Jake Reid came close to reducing the arrears soon after when his header flew out off the post however that was as close as the Seagulls came and Welling saw the game out with relative ease.
In November, Weston returned to Park View Road in the F.A. Trophy and it was their turn to claim the honours. Dayle Grubb gave Welling a tough time in the first period and it came as no surprise that he was involved in the only goal just after half time.
He sent Gethyn Hill away and the Seagulls’ striker made no mistake when shooting beyond Ryan Sandford. Welling huffed and puffed but never really looked likely to get back into the game.
For Saturday’s game Welling’s player manager, Jamie Coyle, will have decisions to make. He may feel that he needs to make changes after last weekend’s disappointing defeat at Whitehawk. Jack Parkinson will be available again following his suspension but the availability of Adam Coombes is questionable.
Tom Bradbrook came out of semi-retirement to help out for the last two games but got sent off in injury time and his three match ban will see him out for the rest of the season.
Despite suffering heavy blows to their squad when Bristol City called back Ashley Harper and Bristol Rovers recalled both Mohammad Baghdadi and Kenan Dunnwald. It didn’t appear to trouble them too much as they beat Oxford City 4-2 with Hill notching a hat-trick.
After the match, the club bar will be hosting the end of season presentations and Welling will be hoping that it’s on the back of a victory.
