Welling United v Wealdstone preview

After two consecutive games on the road, Welling United return to Park View Road where they entertain Wealdstone looking to extend their excellent league form.

They have now won six consecutive Vanarama National League South games, five with clean sheets, and unbeaten in eight.

Their last three wins have been very different. At home to Chippenham, they won comprehensively. Then at Weston-super-Mare, they put on a professional display to win 2-0 against another in form team.

However, last Saturday it was a gritty performance that saw them through to another three points. In the first half they had to play directly into the face of Storm Brian  One clearance from Dillon Barnes went thirty yards before the wind returned it to him and he had to stop it from going out for a corner.

Following the break, they struggled to create much in a pretty uneventful forty five minutes until one moment of quality was sufficient to claim the spoils. Jack Richards, on debut, put in a cross that was half cleared to Joe Healy. He brought it down before lifting it over the stranded goalkeeper. It extended his goalscoring run to six consecutive league and cup goals.

Visitors Wealdstone will arrive in confident mood as they are unbeaten in six league games. That is mainly due to their home form, however, as they are yet to win away in any competition. They have clocked up five draws in their seven games on the road.

One person who will have an idea on what to expect at Welling is manager Bobby Wilkinson. He and his management team were in charge of the Hungerford Town team that lost 3-2 at Park View Road after which they resigned en-bloc.

Jamie Coyle, Welling’s manager, will have difficult team selections to make. Now that they are beyond the difficult phase of two games per week, and have nearly all their players back to fitness. He has said that anyone who has the shirt keeps the shirt if they perform which means that he was on the bench, himself, at Gloucester, such has been the form of Ian Gayle.

He has two high quality goalkeepers, Dillon Barnes and Kleton Perntreou, battling for the number one shirt. Sean Francis is also competing with Coyle should a defensive position become available whilst Richards will be looking for a starting place on either side of the pitch.

Up front, Tom Bradbrook, Bradley Goldberg and Eli Phipps have all been in the goals of late but cannot all start. They are tough choices for Coyle to make, but if the old cliché is true, they present a headache that managers don’t mind.
