Welling United v Truro City preview

Following two consecutive home defeats without a goal, Welling United will be hoping it’s third time lucky when they entertain Truro City on Saturday.

Losing at home to Weston-super-Mare ended their hopes in the F.A. Trophy. That was followed by a 3-0 loss to East Thurrock United in the Vanarama National South..

On their travels, Welling are unbeaten since the opening day of the season but at Park View Road they are struggling and have failed to win in four since beating Chippenham Town 4-0 in early October.

Their one away reversal was against Saturday’s visitors Truro. It was the first of three occasions so far this season when Welling have clawed back a 2-0 deficit but the only time that they went on to lose.

Aaron Lamont’s deflected shot gave Truro the lead from their first attack in the tenth minute then Cody Cooke made it two just before the break..

Jamie Coyle pulled one back from Christian Nanetti’s corner five minutes into the second half. He then repeated the trick nine minutes later, this time from a deep Nanetti free kick. From that point on, Welling looked the most likely to win but there was a sting in the tail. River Allen’s hopeful deep cross in injury time caught in the wind and went in clipping the far post with Chris Lewington floundering.

Looking back, Welling Assistant Manager Hugo Langton felt that Welling only had themselves to blame. “I don’t think it’s about owing them anything.” he said. “I thought that on that day we were the architects of our own downfall.

Since then, Truro have spent the majority of the season in the top four and also got to the first round of the F.A. Cup before losing 3-1 at Charlton Athletic. They are still in the F.A. Trophy and will visit Sutton United in the next round.

However, they are also coming into this match on the back of two defeats. Last Saturday, they lost 2-1 at home to St, Albans City then on Tuesday night they were beaten 3-1 at Oxford City.

Langton knows that it will be tough, but it’s a good opportunity for them to claim a morale boosting result.  He said “Truro have been on a great run. They’ve done a lot of travelling recently and they’ve got to travel again.

“It’s not about them this week, it’s about us. We’ve got some things that we need to sort out ourselves. Two home games without scoring a goal and there’s things we got to look at.”

Manager Coyle has taken action by bringing in Callum Driver from Hemel Hempstead Town and the right back will be expected to come straight in to replace the suspended Connor Dymond.

After the Truro game, Welling have a weekend off so Coyle will expect nothing less than 100% effort.
