Once again, the Welling United changing room could have an under new management sign on the door.
Last Saturday, Alex Dyer was unveiled as manager for the rest of the season but the starting line up and formation were selected for him as he had not had long enough to get to know his charges. Now he will have taken a training session and expects to pick his own team.
However, after Welling’s comprehensive victory over Gosport Borough, he may not feel the need to make changes when his team entertains Truro City on Good Friday. Dyer was at pains to say that the job of avoiding relegation had not been completed.
Strikers Pierre Joseph-Dubois and Alex Cathline both helped themselves to a brace against Gosport while goalkeeper Chris Lewington and the back four kept another home clean sheet.
One more victory for Welling would mean that Gosport would have to win all four of their remaining games to overtake the Wings. In fact, should Welling defeat Truro, and Gosport fail to win at Bishop’s Stortford, Welling will be safe.
On paper, Welling will be expected to win. Only Lincoln City and Wealdstone have beaten Welling at Park View Road in their last fourteen Vanarama National League South, F.A. Trophy and Kent Reliance Senior Cup games.
Meanwhile, Truro have lost nine consecutive league away games, the most recent being a 2-1 defeat at Margate.
Failing to take them seriously could prove disastrous, however. They drew 1-1 at big spending Forest Green Rovers in the F.A. Trophy in January and last week they dented Ebbsfleet United’s automatic promotion hopes with a 1-1 draw in Cornwall.
When Welling visited Treyew Road in August, they came away with a hard earned point. Cody Cooke put Truro ahead six minutes into the second half but substitute Harry Crawford scored the equaliser on 68 minutes.
Lewington was called upon to make a spectacular save from a deflected shot but Welling were good value for their point in a game in which Adam Coombes and Lyle Della-Verde made their Wings debuts.
