Another episode will be entered into the history of Welling United on Saturday when they meet Tranmere Rovers for the first time ever.
As if the wasn’t enough in itself, people throughout the country will be able to enjoy the match, kicking off at 12:30, as it will be broadcast live on BT Sports.
Two consecutive relegations have landed Rovers in the Vanarama National and they will be looking to follow the example of Bristol Rovers by bouncing back into the Football League at the first time of asking.
They sit four places and four points outside the play-off zone at present having won three, drawn two and lost two.
Strangely, six defenders have already scored this season, but only striker Andy Mangan has notched twice for the side from Birkenhead.
How much would Welling manager Loui Fazakerley appreciate a goal or two from one of his defenders? Sahr Kabba is the Wings’ leading goalscorer so far this season, but has had to sit out recent games through a nagging groin injury.
There was no lack of effort from the Welling team at Woking on Monday, and they were the better side for the first hour. They have showed, time and again, that the need fear no-one. Once they find the key to converting possession and territorial advantage into goals, they’ll be flying high.
When BT Sports visited Park View Road last season, it was Fazakerley’s first game at the helm and the team was in a bit of disarray. They entertained Altrincham, but despite the carnival atmosphere, they stumbled to a 1-0 defeat.
Since then, Fazakerley and his management team have had time to assemble their own squad and install their preferred methods and tactics. What better time could there be to kick-start their season?
