On Tuesday evening, Welling United are in Vanarama National League South action when they host Taunton Town.
Recent disappointing form has left the Wings in eighteenth place in the table with just a six point buffer between them and the relegation zone.
Injuries aren’t helping their cause. Medy Elito, Rob Howard, Taylor Maloney, Christie Pattisson and goalkeeper Myles Roberts were all absent on Saturday.
On top of that, player/coach Sam Cox and their other goalkeeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle have been called up for international duty, so Warren Feeney will be down to bare bones when selecting his squad for the Taunton game.
After the match at Weymouth, Feeney confirmed to Olly Groome, Welling’s Head of Media, that he will be pulling out all the stops into bringing in another goalkeeper.
On Saturday, Welling visited Weymouth and were beaten by the Terras for the third time this season. Their disciplinary problems surfaced again when Amadou Kassarate was dismissed for the third time this season and he will face a lengthy suspension, but not until after the Taunton game.
Shortly after the break, Bradley Ash put Weymouth ahead. They then had a chance to extend their lead when awarded a contentious penalty but McKenzie-Lyle saved Ahkeem Rose’s spot kick.
Seven minutes remained when Welling drew level. James Dunne’s long range effort hit the inside of the post and came out for Ade Azeez who made no mistake.
Welling continued to look to find a winner bot got caught by a sucker-punch deep into stoppage time when Rose atoned for his earlier penalty miss by following up to finish after Ash’s effort had been cleared off the line by Jamie Sendles-White.
Meanwhile, Taunton were also on the wrong side of a two-one scoreline when they entertained Hemel Hempstead Town. Charlee Hughes and Josh Williams gave the Tudors a two goal half time advantage at half time.
Dylan Morgan pulled one back twenty minutes into the second half but they couldn’t find an equaliser.
It will be the first ever visit to Park View Road for the Peacocks who are in their first season at Non-League step two. Their first game at this level was the season curtain raiser on a warm Saturday in August against Welling United. That game ended nil-nil.
An F.A. Cup run to the first round, including a victory over Yeovil Town in a fourth qualifying round replay, plus poor weather, has given them a backlog of fixtures meaning that they have to play twice a week until the end of the season.
They are below Welling, but with games in hand, so it’s a very important game for both teams.
