Welling United v Slough Town preview

Following a weekend of mixed emotions, Welling United entertain Slough Town on Saturday.

On Saturday, they had a miserable afternoon at St Albans. Three down within twelve minutes meant there was no coming back and two more goals in the second half added to the pain.

Two days later, Welling, with no points from three games, entertained unbeaten Concord Rangers and few, other than ardent supporters, would have given them much of a chance.

However, after three games of conceding early, it was Welling’s turn to make the first impression. Che Krabbendam played a one-two with Ben Allen and strode through to finish well.

Welling looked for a second but found Concord goalkeeper, Myles Roberts, in irresistible form and could have been more than one up at the break. They continued to press after the break before Concord had a good spell and missed some chances before levelling.

Many would have expected Welling to collapse after that but they lifted their game and scored the winner in injury time when Mason Saunders-Henry collected a loose ball and fired just inside the far post.

Slough have played three games so far this season. They beat Chelmsford City on the league opening day but have since lost at Dartford and at home to Chippenham Town.

There was no meeting between the two teams at Park View Road last season but they had a game not to be forgotten away last season. Welling appeared to be cruising, and even after having a player needlessly sent off, they still entered injury time four-two up. But panic stations set in and two goals were conceded.

At this stage of the season, it’s difficult to predict what might happen, but with the way that Welling manager Steve Lovell likes to play, an entertaining game can be anticipated.

With no Premier League or Championship games this weekend, Welling are offering reduced admission prices for London club supporters presenting season tickets and will be hopeful that a bumper crowd can produce a great atmosphere.
