Entertaining Lincoln City on Tuesday gives Welling United an immediate opportunity to put their disappointing defeat at Boreham Wood behind them.
Manager Loui Fazakerley made his disappointment clear having gone to Hertfordshire in confident mood and expects more. “We need to be better on Tuesday, that’s for sure. We want to put things right. We’ll look at Lincoln and come up with our game plan.”
Matters were not made any better when Harry Osborne was dismissed in the closing minutes at Boreham Wood resulting in an automatic one game suspension. Fazakerley will hope that Michael Chambers is able to return from an injury picked up in the first half of the game with Bromley last week as Zach Fagan is definitely out.
They won’t expect to be given an easy ride by Lincoln. The Imps are one point outside the play off zone having played one game fewer than the clubs above them. On Saturday, they won a 3-2 thriller at Chester.
Matt Rhead put them ahead in the fourth minute but Jordan Chapell equalised on 26 minutes. Two minutes later they regained their lead through Lee Beevers. The advantage was extended by Alan Power after the break, but reduced when Ross Hannah scored with 23 minutes remaining. No further goals ensured City went home with the spoils.
Unbeaten in five, and having won their last three, Lincoln will be reasonably confident however Welling have become a bogey club to them since the Wings returned to non regional football.
Last September, Welling beat Lincoln 2-0 at Park View Road. Jake Gallagher put them ahead in the first half and Tyrone Marsh made the game safe with twelve minutes remaining. Two first half goals, scored by Dominic Vose and Jason Williams, helped them complete the double at Sincil Bank.
That followed another double in the 2013-14 season. Gallagher scored the only goal of the first meeting in Welling and three points were secured away with a ‘come from behind’ victory. Kris Bright scored an early goal for the hosts but strikes from Josh Wakefield and Harry Beautyman put Welling ahead before the break. That proved to be sufficient as the defence was rarely troubled in the second period.
If the Welling team start well, and their supporters get behind their team, Lincoln could be in for another difficult game at Park View Road.
