Two defeats for Welling United were followed by two very different draws.
Now they are looking for their first victory and will be looking to claim it when Hungerford Town visit Park View Road on Saturday.
Last Saturday, Welling shared the points with Bognor Regis Town in a very open 3-3 draw that they should have won. Then, on Tuesday, they again had to settle for a point with a goal-less draw that had far fewer clear cut chances.
Being a defender, player manager Jamie Coyle will have been delighted with his team’s first clean sheet of the season. Other than when Nathaniel Pinney hit the bar with a header, the hosts were kept mainly to long range shots whilst Welling missed two or three good chances of their own.
Coyle knows that Hungerford won’t give Welling an easy ride on Saturday. They finished last season in a very creditable fifth place and only missed out on the play offs due to a ground grading issue.
They started this season with a nil nil draw at Dartford before defeating Weston-super-Mare 2-0. However, since claiming four points from those two games, they have suffered back to back 2-0 defeats, first at home to Hemel Hempstead Town and then at Oxford City on Tuesday evening.
When the two teams met at Park View Road last season, neither side was able to make a breakthrough and had to settle for a nil nil draw. The first half was devoid of chances but the second half was livelier.
Chris Lewington saved from Warren Bentley and Matt Day before Welling had chances when Pierre Joseph-Dubois headed wide and Phil Walsh had one cleared off the line.
Joseph-Dubois did manage to get the ball into the net when following up after Lewis Ward pushed out Dan Walker’s shot but he had strayed offside.
At present, Welling are in the bottom three (on alphabetical order) but know that victory over Hungerford would leap-frog them and start their push up the table.
