Welling United v Hemel Hempstead Town preview

August Bank Holiday weekend is a busy time for Non-League teams and Welling United have two tough fixtures over the three days.

On Monday they visit joint leaders Concord Rangers however before that they entertain another team who will be looking to claim a play-off place in April. Hemel Hempstead Town visit Park View Road in what promises to be another tight encounter.

Last Saturday the Tudors tasted defeat for the first time this season, losing 2-0 at home to Woking.

Prior to that, they had won two and drawn two. They started with victories at home to Chippenham (4-2) and away to Hampton and Richmond Borough (2-1). Two goal-less draws then followed, away to Dartford and at home to Hungerford Town.

Whilst they have gone three games without a goal, Welling manager Steve King is also looking for a formula that will result in more of their chances being converted into goals. They did score two away to Truro City last Saturday but could only take away a point after Truro after the hosts levelled at the end of two additional minutes following on from the original three additional minutes.

Jordan Gibbons will miss the match through an injury incurred at Truro which looks likely to keep him out for another couple of weeks. Charles Banya made deputise although another option could be to recall Archie Johnson who is on dual registration with Cray Wanderers.

Zack Newton has been sent out on loan to Walton Casuals having not yet featured for the Wings first team this season. He scored on his debut, away to Tiverton Town, and will return with some playing time under his belt to challenge for a place in the first team.

There will be familiar faces in the Hemel squad on Saturday. Last season’s club captain Connor Dymond departed from Welling on the eve of the season openers and has signed for the Tudors. They also have former Wings Joe Howe and Charlie Sheringham in their ranks.

When the two teams met at Park View Road in March it was a pretty dour affair with neither team doing enough to deserve a win. It promises to be another tight affair on Saturday but with a lot more excitement.
