On Saturday, Welling United host Havant and Waterlooville in another important Vanarama National League South derby fixture.
They will need to bounce back quickly after their defeat at home to Dorking Wanderers on Easter Monday which Wings manager Warren Feeney described as ‘unacceptable.’
Having claimed a point at Eastbourne Borough to take them off the foot of the table on Good Friday they suffered a heavy defeat three days later after which Feeney said “We’re on a tough run now. All the games will be hard. We’ve got to look at the games coming up and try and get something.
“I don’t really want to look at other clubs. We’ve got to get our own house in order. It’s a difficult situation we’re in and we’ve got to keep the players going and hopefully get it right and get them where we want to go.”
Visitors. Havant will give them another stern test. At present, the Hawks are clinging on to the final play-off place after their Easter Monday game against Eastbourne Borough. The Sports were reduced to eight men due to three red cards by midway through the second half but held out until nine minutes before the end before the Hawks scored three times.
Their home and way records are identical with seven wins, five draws and six defeats and they have not conceded in three unbeaten games since losing four-nil at Maidstone United.
When the two teams met in Hampshire on the opening day of the season, the Hawks won three-nil through goals by James Roberts in the seventh minute, Scott Rendell in first half stoppage time, and Billy Clifford in the last few seconds.
Feeney will be wanting Welling to show the spirit and never-say-die attitude from Good Friday, to enable them to pick up the points required to save them from the drop.
