Welling United v Hampton & Richmond Borough preview

Having guaranteed Vanarama National League South safety on Saturday, Welling United will be looking to finish the season with two more victories.

Next Saturday, they visit Havant and Waterlooville but before that they have a rearranged home game against Hampton and Richmond Borough.

Manager Warren Feeney has stated that he is not one to allow seasons to peter out and he will want their home campaign to finish with a fourth consecutive win at Park View Road.

On Saturday, his team beat league champions Ebbsfleet United three-two.

It looked ominous for the Wings early on and Darren McQueen had already fired over three times before he opened the scoring for the Fleet with still under twenty minutes on the clock.

Greg Cundle came close to adding a second soon after but Welling then started to grow into the game.

Ten minutes before half time, Stefan Payne levelled when he fired home after Manny Parry’s header was knocked into his path by an Ebbsfleet defender and he claimed his second three minutes into the second period. He completed his hat-trick with a superb finish from twenty yards.

Although Josh Wright pulled one back in stoppage time, it was too little too late.

At the same time, Hampton were tumbling to a two-nil defeat at Concord Rangers having guaranteed safety one game earlier. Like Welling, key to their survival has been three consecutive home wins.

Back in early October when the two teams met at the Beveree Stadium, it was a game of two penalties. Maloney put Welling ahead from the spot midway through the first half but Tommy Block levelled three minutes after the break.

In last season’s corresponding fixture, Hampton claimed all three points. At half time, Welling appeared to be in control. Dipo Akinyemi opened the scoring in the fifteenth minute and Ade Shokunbi, who has since had a spell at Hampton, made it two just after the half hour mark.

Jake Gray bundled home just shy of the hour mark to pull one back and four minutes later, Ryan Gondoh levelled. It took just four further minutes for the game to be turned on its head completely when Niko Muir put the visitors into a lead that they did not give-up.

One former Wing may be in the Hampton team visiting a former club if Southend United loanee, Tommy Smith, recovers from a knee injury.
