New look Welling United start their Vanarama National campaign with a home game against newly promoted Guiseley.
There are no fewer than nine incoming players plus on-loan goalkeeper Tom King, on a one month loan from Millwall.
Not all are new to Welling’s methods, however, as two each had two loan spells at the club. Michael Chambers and Harry Osborn were snapped up by Loui Fazakerley following their release from Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic respectively.
Last season, Welling also started their campaign with a home game against a newly promoted club. AFC Telford United arrived at Park View Road with the momentum of a successful season behind them and went ahead in the 35th minute.
Two bookings for Godfrey Poku in under five minutes just before the break saw the visitors reduced to ten men just before the break. They were further hampered within seven second half minutes when Mike Phenix was dismissed for his second yellow card.
After 66 minutes Welling levelled through Harry Beautyman but were unable to break down the resolute and well organised nine men Bucks team again.
Whilst Guiseley may seem like an unknown quantity, the management team have been doing their homework. Fazakerley confirmed “We have analysed our fair share of video footage and have spoken to reliable sources who know a lot about them so we are very well prepared.”
Injuries to Kieron St. Aimie, the results of a scan on his knee are awaited, Joey Taylor and Barney Williams are likely to keep them out of contention but Fazakerley and his team have plenty of options to consider before selecting their starting eleven.
