Welling United v Gateshead preview

Welling United put their disappointment of defeat last Saturday behind them with a comfortable victory on Tuesday and now look forward to entertaining Gateshead this weekend.FOOTBALL (WELLING HOME)

Just as Welling had been the better team at Wrexham last Saturday, but to no avail, they were again the superior team on Tuesday and claimed a comprehensive 2-0 win over Lincoln City.

Gateshead will provide a very different challenge to Lincoln. Whilst the Imps play a very direct style with goalkeeper and defenders launching the ball forward as quickly as they could, Gateshead like to play from the back and play a good passing game.

Gary Mills’ team are currently in fifth place, just two points behind leaders Barnet. Their away record is good having beaten Wrexham and Altrincham. They drew at Eastleigh and Macclesfield whilst their only defeat was at Kidderminster Harriers. However, Welling are unbeaten at home and will be looking to extend their record.

Tobi Sho-Silva suffered what looked to be a serious injury against Lincoln but it appears that it was not as bad as first feared and that he may be able to play on Saturday. Jon Nouble will be available after serving a one match ban and Sam Corne, Loui Fazakerley and Joe Healy all had some playing time following injuries and knocks.

In the corresponding fixture last season, Welling beat the Heed 2-0. Healy put the Wings ahead in the seventh minute of an even first half. The second half, however, belonged to the Wings and Alfie Mawson’s 59th minute goal secured the three points that took Welling close to the points total they deemed would guarantee safety.

It promises to be an entertaining game and the club will be hoping for the turnout that the team’s recent performances deserve.
