Welling United follow up their hard earned point at Tamworth on Saturday by entertaining Gateshead tonight.
Kurtis Guthrie scored an excellent goal to put Welling ahead but Tamworth gambled with very attacking substitutions and claimed an equaliser through Matty Godden, who has also played for Dartford this season, with five minutes remaining.
Two players made their Welling debuts in the game. Alfie Mawson, on loan from Brentford, filled in at centre half following the recent departures of Fraser Franks and Doug Bergqvist. Millwall’s Tom Bender joined the fray after Tamworth’s equaliser.
The match with Gateshead will be the Wings’ first game under the enhanced floodlights at Park View Road, the initial ground improvement to be completed to satisfy the Skrill Premier requirements.
In January, Welling had the long trek to the North East for a Tuesday night fixture and now the Heed have the reverse midweek journey. At Gateshead, Welling came out strongly and went ahead when Joe Healy headed home Ross Lafayette’s cross.
The Wings came under considerable pressure but it took a highly contentious penalty decision to bring about the leveller. Markus Maddison tumbled in the area but picked himself up to level from the spot. Welling regrouped and were not troubled again and took home a well earned point.
Harry Cornick’s loan from AFC Bournemouth has been extended for another month as the Wings have eight games in March, and the squad has been bolstered further by the signing of Basile Karagiannis a free agent.
His last club was Chambly in France so he is unavailable until his international clearance is received, but Jamie Day will have a strong squad available for the Gateshead game.
