Welling United will be hoping that their game with Gateshead on Saturday will go ahead despite the grim weather forecast.Welling United

AFC Bournemouth’s Harry Cornick and Josh Wakefield are both on a one month loan along with Tobi Sho-Silva from Charlton Athletic so it would be disappointing for all parties if they missed out, especially as the Wings are without a game on the following weekend.

Last Saturday, the Wings put in a thoroughly professional performance to see off Chester on another successful away day. The Wings had looked good before Cornick burst through to finish comfortably.

Sho-Silva was instrumental in the second when chasing down a back pass, tackling the hurried Chester goalkeeper then squaring for Ross Lafayette to finish. Joe Healy’s fourth goal in four games put the Wings well in command and Chester’s goal soon after was no more than a consolation.

On transfer deadline day, manager Jamie Day also recruited Toby Ajala following his release from Bristol City along with Alfie Mawson, on loan from Brentford for the rest of the season.

The recruitment of the players allowed Day to send out two players on loan. Kiernan Hughes-Mason has gone to Hayes and Yeading United for a one month spell to try and regain his form whilst Loick Pires has gone to Whitehawk for a similar length of time to get some playing time following his injury. Joe Obersteller, who played at Chester, has also joined Whitehawk.

Day will know what to expect from Gateshead as it is less than three weeks since the two clubs met in the North East. Welling went ahead through Healy’s header from Lafayette’s cross but they then had to withstand some heavy pressure. Having defended well to go in ahead at the break, the Wings were disappointed in the way they conceded. Marcus Maddison somehow convinced the referee that he had been fouled in the penalty area then converted from the spot.

A change in formation meant that Welling shored up the defence and Gateshead rarely threatened again and it will be interesting to see how the two teams approach the return. One thing that can be guaranteed is that the game will be a very different style game to the last Skrill Premier match at Park View Road.
