On Saturday, Blue Square Bet South Champions Welling United host Eastleigh for their final game of the season.Welling United

Celebrations started at the end of their draw at Boreham Wood last Saturday although it took Salisbury City’s failure to win at Sutton United to seal the achievement.

The trophy will be presented to captain Lee Clarke, who scored the all important goal last week, on Saturday.

Eastleigh ensured their place in the play-offs with victory over Truro City on Tuesday night. Amongst their goalscorers that evening was Craig McAllister, the striker who is in white hot form having notched hat-tricks in his two previous matches.

Welling will be wary of the Spitfires, the only team to have defeated the Wings at Park View Road in the last two seasons. Having already cemented their place in last season’s play offs, Welling experimented with a different formation and were caught cold by Danny Smith’s goal shortly before half time.

When the teams met earlier this season, Welling returned home with a 3-1 win following an excellent second half. McAllister put the hosts ahead early on and they held on until the break. However, ten minutes into the second half, Welling pulled level through a Scott Kinch thunderbolt. A goal that is still disputed between Anthony Acheampong and Joe Healy as to who scored, put the Wings ahead and Kiernan Hughes-Mason added a third.

Although the main objective has been achieved, Welling will be keen to complete a season unbeaten at home in the league, and their record of being the league’s leading scorers whilst having the meanest defence.

Winning the league has been a marvellous achievement and there should be a tremendous atmosphere at Park View Road to commemorate the work of Jamie Day, his management team, and the title winning players.
