Welling United v Concord Rangers preview

After further cup success, Welling United can now spend the next few weeks concentrating on their efforts to get out of the relegation places.

Results in cup football have been impressive but their Vanarama National League South campaign has been more challenging.

However, their last league game against Bath City was a much improved display and gave Welling supporters a lot more optimism.

Adam Coombes scored a brace that day and Harry Crawford was on target as Welling beat the Romans  three one. They dominated the game other than a few minutes either side of half time, and further performances like that will see them pull away.

Last Saturday, they crushed Hythe Town 8-1 and Coombes added two more to take his season’s tally to 23 in all competitions.

To reach that stage, Welling had to defeat Saturday’s opposition Concord Rangers away and they claimed the spoils with a 1-0 victory, courtesy of a late George Oakley pile-driver. The Beachboys were without key player Jordan Chiedozie that day and have since strengthened by signing former Wing Lyle Della-Verde.

When the teams first met in the league in early September, Della-Verde was on target for the Wings along with a hat-trick by Coombes and one from Pierre Joseph-Dubois as Welling came away 5-0 winners.

Pierre Joseph-Dubois and Dan Walker could be back in contention and although Rickie Hayles had to be substituted, he should be fit to return. Harry Crawford also had to be withdrawn as a precaution but is also expected to be fit. .

Now, with four successive successes  in all competitions, Welling manager Day wants the run to continue but is wary of what’s ahead.

“We’ve got a really tough game against Concord, against Adam Flanagan’s team. We beat them before in the last round (of the FA Trophy) but they’ve got good players that were missing that day. They’ve been on a very good run and they have a very good manager so we know that it’s not going to be easy.”

Looking at the Concord game plus the festive season with Margate, he continued “We’re playing teams that are around the same situation as us so we need wins. Without putting pressure on the boys, they’ve been first class so far, hopefully we can keep performing and reaching the levels we have done. I’m looking forward to it.
