A combination of Dulwich Hamlet and Storm Dennis couldn’t stop Welling United from returning to winning ways.
Romoney Crichlow-Noble scored the only goal with under ten minutes on the clock but Welling were good value for their three points even though Dan Wilks was called on to make some good saves.
Unfortunately, Crichlow-Noble was Welling’s one casualty from the game with a suspected fractured cheekbone and manager Brad Quinton will hope that if he is confirmed as unavailable, Rob Swaine has trained well during the week as he recovers from illness.
Visitors, Chippenham Town, are four points behind Welling and also come into the game on the back of a one-nil victory after beating Maidstone United at home last weekend having won by the same score at Hemel Hempstead Town one week earlier.
When the two clubs met at Park View Road earlier in the season neither team did enough to win and the game ended in a nil-nil draw Each side had the better of the half with the wind behind their backs but the real winner was the groundsman who managed to get the game on after torrential rain.
Away from home, Chippenham’s victory at Hemel was their second on the road this season, they also won at Concord Rangers, and they have drawn six and lost seven.
Only Crichlow-Noble and Swaine would appear to be doubts and with the attacking options at Quinton’s disposal, he has intriguing decisions to make on who will start.
Last season’s corresponding game ended in a two-one come from behind victory for the hosts. Karnell Chambers opened the scoring early on and Welling struggled to break down a well marshalled defence.
Fewer than twenty minutes remained when Welling finally pulled one back. Danny Mills crossed from the right and Brendan Kiernan levelled from close range. The Wings weren’t finished there and scored again with ten minutes left on the clock. This time, Kiernan turned provider and his cross was met by Josh Hill whose header, aided by a deflection, won the game.
So tight is the league that victory on Saturday might take Welling up to twelfth place however defeat, combined with other results going against them, could leave them back just four points above the relegation zone.
