Following Saturday’s postponement, the game between Welling United and Chippenham Town has been rearranged for Tuesday evening.
Whether it’s a good thing for the Wings, time will tell. Last Tuesday they hosted a more experienced than expected Leyton Orient side in the London Senior Cup. Jack Barham put Welling ahead with a superb finish in the first half and Danny Mills made it two after the break. Although the Os pulled one back with ten minutes remaining it proved to be a mere consolation.
It was an intriguing game as along with some experienced players, Leyton Orient fielded some hungry younger players and the full time team made Welling work hard to claim their victory. The delay that the postponement caused means that the Wings players were allowed a little more recovery time.
On the negative, Welling have a grim midweek record this season having lost every league and cup game, other than London Senior Cup, that has had an evening kick off time this season.
Visitors Chippenham Town are just three points behind the Wings and will be looking to draw level. However their away form is nothing spectacular having won four, drawn three and lost seven.
Back in August, Welling visited Wiltshire and put in an excellent performance winning four-one. Brendan Kiernan opened the scoring for the Wings in the twelfth minute but Karnell Chambers levelled soon after.
Bradley Goldberg restored Welling’s lead from the penalty spot after Danny Mills had been brought down in the area and they added a third through Thierry Audel just before half time. Kiernan added a fourth in the second half as Welling cruised to victory.
When the two teams met at Park View Road last season, Welling enjoyed an even more comfortable victory. Joe Healy put Welling ahead and Tom Bradbrook increased their lead four minutes before the break. Four minutes after the break Bradbrook scored again and Goldberg completed the scoring with ten minutes remaining.
Welling will be looking to end their midweek jinx to ensure they remain well placed in the play-off zone.
