Welling United v Bromley preview
Welling United v Bromley preview

London Senior Cup football takes place this evening when Welling United host Bromley.

Both clubs have other priorities however, they can still get value out of the fixture. Rod Stringer’s Welling team have dropped into the bottom three and are at series risk of relegation from step two for the first time in their history.

This fixture gives him, and coach Colin Reid, the opportunity to practice defensive drills in competitive football without captain Dave Winfield. He will be absent suspended for Saturday’s game and beyond. Players who haven’t had much time on the field recently may also be given an opportunity to convince the management that they are ready to fight for a place in the starting line up.

Visitors Bromley are expected to field an under twenty-one side as they have a Sky Bet League Two fixture at home to Walsall two days later. In their first season as a football league club, their interest is at the other end of the table.

They are five points adrift of the play-offs after suffering a surprise two-one defeat at Tranmere Rovers on Saturday. The Bromley youngsters represented the club in their Kent Senior Cup run that finished in the quarter finals at Ebbsfleet United with a defeat on penalties.

Each side has played just one game in the London Senior Cup so far this season having had a bye in the first round. Welling’s game was way back at the start of October when they won three-nil at Sporting Bengal United. Neither side scored in the first half and it was Martell Taylor-Crossdale who put the Wings ahead just after the hour mark.

Cameron Andrews added a second, eleven minutes later before Rhys Lovett saved a Joe Gregory penalty. Anointed Chukwu rounded off the scoring in stoppage time.

They then had to wait for over four months to find out who would oppose them in the third round. When they finally met at Imber Court, Bromley took the honours with a one-nil victory over Metropolitan Policce, courtesy of a goal scored by Frankie Moralee just shy of the half hour mark.

Whoever wins will have a home quarter-final against Brentford B, with the winner of that tie hosting Barking in the semi-finals.
