Welling United v Braintree Town preview

On Tuesday Welling United start their trilogy of consecutive league home games in eight days when they host Braintree Town in a Vanarama National League South fixture.

On Saturday, they defeated Slough Town three-nil to finish their run of away games with one win, one draw and one defeat. George Alexander scored all three goals, two of which were assisted by Ade Azeez.

After the match Alexander confirmed that the two strikers were building up a good relationship, and that he is as happy setting up opportunities for his partner as he is in scoring himself.

Welling’s A team will need to be at their best when Braintree visit on Tuesday. The Iron are currently in seventh place, the final position in the play-off zone, following their one all draw with Dartford on Saturday.

Aaron Blair opened the scoring for them in the seventeenth minute but they had to settle for a point when Jernade Meade levelled just after the hour mark.

They have gone seven games undefeated with four wins and three draws and are yet to taste defeat at home. Their away form isn’t quite as good, though, with five wins, two draws, and eight defeats on the road.

When the two teams met in Essex back in October, the Iron won comfortably. Welling went ahead on the half hour mark through Azeez but Baris Altintop levelled four minutes later. Former Wing Alfie Matthews then put the hosts ahead three minutes before the break.

Second half goals from Lamar Reynolds and Matt Rush ensured victory for Braintree.

Despite the absence of the suspended James Dunne and Stefan Payne, Welling manager Warren Feeney is looking forward to the challenge.

He said: “I remember what Braintree did to us down there and you’ll always get another chance. They’re a good side and they are where they are on merit.”

“It’s a tough, tough game but it’s one that I’m very excited about.”

In the corresponding game last season, both teams were fighting to avoid bottom spot and relegation. It was a tight affair with just one goal, Ade Shokunbi scoring the only goal. Welling’s goalkeeper, who kept a clean sheet, was Jack Sims who is now in Braintree’s number one.

As well as Matthews and Sims, another former Wing, Alfie Pavey, is likely to be up against Welling in what is set up to be another tense encounter.
