Welling United v Billericay Town preview

Peter Taylor’s first month in charge of Welling United ends with a home game against Billericay Town on Saturday.

Billericay have also appointed a new manager in October with Jody Brown taking over from Kevin Watson. Coincidently, prior to their new roles, Taylor and Brown’s last club management roles were together at Dagenham and Redbridge with the current Wings manager in charge, and the former one his assistant.

As a result, both managers know how each other works, and their favoured ways of playing so there could be an interesting tactical game ahead. However, Taylor didn’t want to make too much about that after Tuesday night’s game against Hampton and Richmond Borough. “He’s got a good opportunity at Billericay.” he said.

“With the lack of time on certain things you can’t complicate it too much but I’m sure he’ll have some idea and I’ll have some idea of what we’ll do but after tonight’s game we won’t be able to do too much on Thursday.”

Both teams will be looking to bounce back from disappointing results on Tuesday night. Welling United hosted Hampton and were good value for their two goal half time, courtesy of goals from Dipo Akinyemi and Ade Shokunbi. However, Hampton blitzed Welling with three goals in an eight minute spell around the hour mark and went home with all three points.

Another new Wing came on for a debut on Tuesday night. Malta international Joe Muscatt’s last club was in Germany so international clearance had to be sought but early glimpses suggest that he could be an excellent addition.

Meanwhile, Billericay crashed to a four-one defeat at St. Albans City after taking an early lead. Shaun Jeffers scored a hat-trick for the Saints, to add to his match ball claimed for a similar feat against Welling back in August.

Both of Billericay’s victories this season have been recorded during this month with two-one wins away to Dulwich Hamlet and at home to Slough Town.

When the two teams met at Park View Road last November, the points were shared in a see-saw match. Kyel Reid put the visitors ahead in the fifth minute but Anthony Cook levelled from the spot eight minutes before the break.

Liburd scored his first Welling goal three minutes into the second half but Jake Robinson restored parity from the spot with eight minutes remaining.
