Following two tough but successful away games Welling United return home to entertain Bath City.
Two weeks ago, Welling had to dig deep to win at basement club Weston-super-Mare and last week it was even tougher away to Gloucester at Evesham United’s ground..
On a hard lumpy pitch it was impossible for Welling to play their normal passing football but they showed their ability to adapt and were still the better team. Against Weston, Dan Wilks didn’t have one save to make and last week his only save was in the ninety-third minute. He has now only conceded one goal away in five games and that was from the penalty area.
Anthony Acheampong was dominant at the back and his will to win was evident at the other end when he attacked Gavin McCallum’s corner with a towering header to score with six minutes remaining.
It will be a very different match on Saturday against Bath. The playing surface will be much better for Welling to play their football but it will also suit the Romans. Welling are currently in third place in the league with Bath two places and three points behind. Each side has five games left to play.
Coming into the game, Welling have won six and drawn two of their last eight. Bath are unbeaten in seven although the last three have been draws. They will expect to have a good following as the club has subsidised their supporters coach travel so that they can give their team plenty of backing.
When the two teams met back in September, Welling’s excellent performance merited their two-nil win. McCallum opened the scoring with a clever finish midway through the first half but they had to wait until nine minutes from the end for their second which was scored by Danny Mills
Wings’ manager Steve King will again be without Josh Hill but will hope to have Thierry Audel and Nassim L’Ghoul back in contention. After two months of being unable to fill the substitutes’ bench he finally had five replacements with one over at Gloucester and will again have options against Bath.
Last season’s corresponding fixture was a rearranged midweek game in April after the original Good Friday fixture was postponed. It was disappointing for the Wings as they lost two-nil in a lack-lustre performance. Antoine Semenyo put the visitors ahead three minutes after the break and Tom Smith added a second just shy of the hour mark. A tired Welling had nothing had no way back and could have conceded again.
Only Bradley Goldberg and Jack Jebb remain at Welling one year later so the Wings’ supporters will hope to see a better performance this time around.
