Welling United v Bath City preview

Following Saturday’s victory, Welling United still have an outside chance of claiming a play-off place.

To prolong their season, they have to win their two remaining games and hope that two of the three teams immediately above them get the jitters. Their first game of the two is a tonight when they entertain Bath City.

Things could have been very different. Had the Easter Saturday fixture between the two teams not been brought forward to Good Friday, the game may well have been completed however heavy rain leading up to kick off on the rearranged date meant that the referee had no option but to postpone the match.

Welling manager, Jamie Coyle, said “It’s out of our hands, unfortunately, but all we can do is concentrate and be professional between npw and the end of the season. The aim is to win the last two games and see what happens.”

It will be Bath’s second visit to North West Kent in four days. On Saturday they travelled to Dartford where they failed to score away for just the second time this season. One goal in each half was sufficient for Dartford to keep themselves top of the league.

Meanwhile, Welling were enjoying a regulation victory over Weston-super-Mare. Olumide Durojaiye gave the Wings an early lead with a shot that went in via goalkeeper and a defender, then Jack Parkinson made it two after twenty four minutes.

Although Jarrad Welch pulled one back after the interval, Jack Jebb restored Welling’s two goal advantage two minutes later and they never looked back.

In September, Bath and Welling shared the points in a one-one draw at Twerton Park. Harry Phipps gave Wings the lead early on. At that stage Tom Bradbrook and Bradley Goldberg were giving the Bath defence numerous problems but both had to be replaced before half time.

Although Welling continued to create chances they failed to convert any and paid the price when Jamie Lucas levelled with just over twenty minutes remaining. After that the match went a bit flat and neither team created a clear cut chance to win the game.

Coyle will be awaiting fitness news on Adam Coombes after he looked sharp as a second half substitute however he may choose to start with the eleven who did so well against Weston.

Last season’s corresponding game ended in a good win for Welling which was Jamie Day’s first game of his second spell as manager of the club. Coombes put Welling ahead early on but Bath equalised through Frankie Artus two minutes after the break.

Artus then blotted his copy-book when fouling Christian Nanetti in the penalty area and Coombes converted from the spot. Harry Crawford made the points safe when finishing from Coombes’ pass.
