After two successful cup matches, Welling United return to Vanarama National South league action this weekend with Bath City visiting Park View Road.
Currently sitting bottom but one, Welling need to start picking up league points quickly to climb away from their perilous position.
Navigating the two cup ties against other teams in their division will give them a massive confidence boost and now they must build on it..
Last Saturday was Jamie Day’s first game back in charge following his promotion from head coach to manager and his team put in a professional performance to win 1-0 at Concord Rangers.
They were the better team for most of the match and although they had to wait late for George Oakley’s winner, they were good value for it.
Day is hopeful that Welling will build on that and their Kent Senior Cup success against Dartford, and put on another good show on Saturday. Talking about the F.A. Trophy he said “I want to win it but we’ve got a bigger problem of trying to win games to get up the league table..
“It’s momentum, and that’s what we need. It gives the boys confidence and now we’re two unbeaten we want to keep the run going. We’ve got to take that against Bath. It’s going to be a tough game and we need to turn our home form around.”
Bath have only one won of their last six away games, but it was their most recent, a 1-0 victory at Wealdstone. They are also three league and cup matches unbeaten so Welling will know that they will have to be on top of their game.
Joining Day in the dug out will be another former Wings manager, Adrian Pennock who is working for the club as a consultant. Day said “Ade’s there for me. He’s got a lot of experience, playing and as manager. I’ve worked with him before. He’s going to be valuable for what he can bring to the squad, not just for the players but for myself as well. I can bounce ideas off him and use him where I need to use him.
“I’ve got him straight involved with the boys in the dressing room and on the training pitch. He’s only going to help the club and for me, it’s nice to have support of someone like that, that will tell me honestly what’s going on and how he sees it then it’s down to me to make the decision on whether we go with it or not or what I think. That experience is valuable for me.”
If they can recreate what they have both achieved at Welling in the past, it could be a far more enjoyable second half of the season for Welling supporters.
