Coming into the game, Hythe Town had hopes of causing another upset when visiting Welling United.
They defeated Vanarama National South Bishop’s Stortford but they never looked like bridging the two division gap again against improving Welling United.
Earlier in the season, Welling had scored sixes and sevens against lower division sides and it was Hythe’s turn to be all at sea this time around.
Adam Coombes broke clear of a ragged offside trap but Ryan Johnson did well to get back and make a superb last ditch challenge.
Lively Christian Nanetti caused havoc throughout and was brought down in the area soon after. Coombes stepped up, and although Joe Mant appeared to have done his homework, the accuracy and power were too much.
Coombes turned creator for the second and crossed to the far post where Nanetti met it with a firm header back that was helped in by Johnson.
Danny Waldren added a third when heading home Sam Hatton’s free kick before Coombes made it four when catching Dave Cook in possession and bursting through to finish.
When Alfie May pulled one back from Johnson’s cross in injury time, it meant that Coombes (23) and May (27) had scored 50 goals between them for their respective clubs this season.
There was still time for one last incident in the first half when Chris Lewington claimed a through ball and in the course of taking it, wiped out team mate Rickie Hayles and Cannons striker Frankie Sawyer. Neither were able to come back for the second half.
Hatton and Waldren combined again for the fifth, this time from a corner that Waldren headed in from close range.
Kenny Pogue came close to reducing the arrears with a header that came back off the bar and was then thwarted by Chris Lewington has he tried to flick a volley beyond him.
Chris Saunders, who had been cautioned in the first half, made another poor tackle and was dismissed making Hythe’s task even harder.
George Oakley and Matt Fish both came close before the latter made it six with an unstoppable drive from the edge of the area.
Substitute Trey Williams made it seven when feasting on Nanetti’s through ball. Although Mant did well to block his first effort, Williams made no mistake with his follow up on debut.
Oakley finished the scoring off in injury time when dummying Mant before blasting home.
Wings’ manager Jamie Day was pleased to extend Welling’s winning run in all competitions to four. “It was a good performance. There’s still lots of things that we need to work on. They’ve had some chances which we’re disappointed with. We’ve won the game and scored some goals and I thought looked comfortable in good patches of it
“So pleased for the boys, and keep the run going now. We’ll work hard again on Tuesday and Thursday and come in next week. In all fairness, we should be winning these games. Obviously it was a bit more comfortable than you set out at the start.”
Cannons defender and former Welling player Johnson admitted that it was a fair result, even if the score line was harsh. “It was a disappointing result but the best team won We go again and now fight to get promotion.”
