Coming into their game with Braintree Town, Welling United had failed to score in their previous five league games but had only conceded three.
Therefore, few would have expected what they were about to witness. The Wings were four up in less than thirty minutes. Braintree pulled one back but Welling scored again soon after the break. Braintree scored again however before Korrey Henry finished the scoring with his fourth and Welling’s sixth in the final minute.
Mark Goldberg made changes playing Theo Widdrington just behind Henry and the combination worked well. Widdrington put the Wings ahead in the seventh minute but they might already have scored three before that as Michel Johnson made saves from Widdrington twice and Rob Swaine.
Connor Dymond’s free kick picked out Swaine and his header back was forced home by Widdrington to end Welling’s long run without a goal.
There was a similarity in Welling’s second goal. This time Ming delivered, Nathan Green nodded back and Henry volleyed home his first Welling goal.
Anthony Cook made it three with a free kick that squirmed under Johnson then Henry added his second with a good shot from the edge of the penalty area.
Cook picked out Widdrington but he glanced his header just wide before Braintree started to create problems. Femi Akinwade hit the post and Rhys Murrell-Williamson was unable to force home the rebound then Jason Banton clipped the crossbar with a free kick.
After Henry had shot wide when looking to complete a first half hat-trick, Braintree pulled one back through a good finish by Ade Cole.
Five minutes after the break, Henry did score his third. He went on a mazy run shaking off two fouls before the third one committed in the area resulted in the award of a penalty.
Although he had a long wait before he could take it, he showed no nerves and sent Johnson the wrong way.
Just as it started to look plain sailing, Welling were reduced to ten men. Player-manager Jake Hutchings bundled Widdrington over the perimeter wall and a melee followed. Both Hutchings and Widdrington were cautioned before the referee showed Ming a red card for something that had followed afterwards.
Despite being short handed Welling had a further chance but Swaine’s header from Montel Agyemang’s corner was saved.
Akinwade reduced the arrears with a well struck shot and then brought two saves out of Dan Wilks, the second of which was a superb tip-over.
Hutchings headed wide from Cole’s corner then Banton brought a comfortable save out of Wilks but Welling continued to look dangerous on the counter attack and wrapped up the scoring one minute before time.
They found themselves two on one and Aaron Cosgrave sent Henry through. He checked back and went past the defender and fired home beyond Johnson.
Beaten Braintree’s misery was compounded in injury time when a shocking tackle by Tyler Christian-Law resulted in a straight red card.
