Never-say-die Welling United ended their ten-match win-less run in an entertaining game with Slough Town.
Seven goals were shared between the two teams with the Wings claiming the three points courtesy of a late winner. On Tuesday night at Dover Athletic they were pegged back by a last gasp equaliser but this time it was Welling’s turn to experience the joy a crucial late goal.
They started in the ascendancy and Kain Adom shot low past the post before they went ahead in the eleventh minute. Jephte Tanga burst into the penalty area and was brought down by Josh Jackman. Goalkeeper Rohan Luthra tried to scuff up the penalty spot and was cautioned however he failed to distract Tristan Abrahams who stepped up to send him the wrong way.
Tanga thought that he had made it two shortly afterwards when Adom’s shot was parried out as far as the Leyton Orient loanee who fired home. His joy was short-lived though, as he was alerted to an offside flag.
Midway through the first half, Welling doubled their lead. Adom caught a hesitant Temi Eweka in possession on the edge of his own penalty area before slotting it beyond a helpless Luthra.
Just as they had done at Dover, the young Wings team struggled to defend a two goal lead and Slough came right back into the game. Nathan Minhas met a Leon Chambers-Parillon cross with a flick header that Javarn Pitterson caught. John Goddard then had a shot blocked out to Chambers-Parillon who shinned it wide.
Seven minutes before half time, the Rebels pulled one back. Goddard crossed to Tyrese Dyce and he controlled it well before blasting home.
George Alexander then came close to equalising in a goalmouth scramble when he shot from close range but Pitterson was in the right place to block. Welling then had an opportunity when Abrahams got the better of Eweka and fired towards the far post. Luthra got down well and tipped it round the post although, bizarrely, a goal kick was awarded.
That allowed Slough to get it to the other end and Alexander had the last chance of the half when his first time shot was tipped away by Pitterson.
After the break, the Rebels came out strongly and they had already had three corners by the time that Dominic Hutchinson’s cross shot was tipped round the post by Pitterson. This time, they took full advantage. Goddard’s delivery was flicked on and Eweka atoned for his earlier error by finishing from close range.
That appeared to rouse the hosts and both Tanga and Cameron Green had shots blocked before Welling went back ahead. Green again found space outside the area and his low shot took a slight deflection on its way towards the bottom corner.
Two minutes later, it was again all square. Slough were awarded a free kick twenty-five yards out and Goddard whipped it over the wall and into the top corner.
Crossley Lema’s low cross was deflected just past his own post and into the side netting by Jackman before Hutchinson drew a save out of Pitterson with a low shot. Dan Bayliss then put his head in the line of fire to keep out Adom’s shot before the lively Welling player was off target with another effort.
Abrahams came close to adding to his earlier penalty when he received a pass from TJ Bramble. Having chosen not to shoot first time he moved it onto his left foot and clattered the bar with his effort from twenty yards.
There was another chance at the other end when a mix up in the penalty area allowed substitute Mikael Platt an opportunity to flick it goalwards. Thankfully for Welling, Lachlan Byrd was alert and able to get back to hack it off the line.
However, it was Welling who claimed the winner in the first minute of stoppage time. David Ogbonna’s foul on Adom earned him a yellow card and a chance for Welling to send up the centre backs. Green delivered to the far post, Byrd backed off before side-footing it back into the middle and Taylor Curran headed it home.
Slough didn’t threaten again until after the final whistle when an unseemly scuffle broke out before the two teams went to their respective sets of supporters.
