Whenever Welling United and Truro City meet at Park View Road there are plenty of goals and the match on Tuesday evening was no different.
There was only one scored in the first half however the visitors will be thinking that they should have notched more as they were quicker to most loose balls and had the better opportunities.
Stern words in the Welling changing room at half time had the desired effect and Welling claimed the three points that took them out of the bottom four.
In the opening minutes Welling goalkeeper Reice Charles-Cook made a mess of a pass out from the back and Tyler Harvey intercepted it. He shot towards the net but Joe Ellul got back to clear off the line.
Sonny Fish out-muscled his man but his goal-bound shot was blocked before Tom Harrison headed over for Truro when meeting a free kick with little challenge.
Dan Sullivan had Truro’s next chance with a volley after a corner was half-cleared but he fired directly at Charles-Cook and Welling’s custodian continued to stand between Truro and a goal. He was out quickly to smother when Rocky Neal broke through, then Sullivan was played in behind and Charles-Cook again made himself big to make a good block.
He continued to be busy when saving Dan Rooney’s low shot before he was finally beaten just shy of the half hour mark. Sullivan showed his strength and gave the Welling goalkeeper no chance with a great low finish. It might have been two immediately afterwards when a miss-hit shot fell into the path of Neal but Charles-Cook made an excellent save from his first time shot.
At the other end, the Wings finally created a chance when Reece Grant headed over a Cameron Green free kick before Fish was off target with half time approaching.
Three minutes after the break, Welling drew level. Sam Sanders’ shocking challenge on Crossley Lema was punished with a free kick only. However, he was made to pay when Green’s delivery caused chaos in the penalty area. It was cleared off the line as far as Gene Kennedy and he slammed it home.
Two minutes later, Welling went ahead when breaking quickly from a Truro corner. Jason Adigun led the break and suddenly Welling had a three versus two break. Adigun timed his pass to Grant to perfection and he slanted it across for Fish to score his fourth goal in four games, and his first that was not in stoppage time.
Ed Palmer broke out from his defensive role for Truro and went on a long run before shooting straight at Charles-Cook. However, the visitors equalised soon after with a spectacular shot out of the blue by Harvey.
Just under fifteen minutes remained when Welling scored what turned out to be the winner. Adigun made space down the left before pulling it back to the edge of the penalty area to Antony Papadopoulos who hit his shot sweetly, flying in off the post.
Papadopoulos was well off target with another shot from long range before Adigun broke again to set up Fish whose shot was beaten out by James Hamon.
As the game moved into stoppage time, a Harvey volley flashed over before Adam Porter failed to keep his side-footer down after Welling struggled to clear.
Welling were not to be denied, though, and extended their unbeaten league run to seven matches.
