Welling United 3-2 Hungerford Town

Three goals in the first twenty minutes gave Welling United the platform to claim their first victory of the season.

They could have gone behind in the first minute when Stefan Brown worked himself a clear shooting chance but mis-kicked horribly with just Dillon Barnes to beat.

That proved costly when Jack Jebb, on debut, slung over a free kick that Jamie Coyle headed home for his fourth goal of the season.

Brown headed wide from Warren Bentley’s cross and Welling again replied with a goal. Bradley Goldberg’s turn got himself past two defenders before he fired into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

Ian Gayle came close from a Jebb corner before another of his deliveries was headed home by Tom Bradbrook for his first Welling goal.

If it looked like it might be a cake-walk for Welling, it all changed when Hungerford pulled one back ten minutes later. Barnes made a brilliant save from Brown’s header but Louie Soares followed up to finish.

Another player making his first Welling start, Jeffrey Monakana on loan from Sutton, went on a thrilling run that was only ended when Ward timed his advance perfectly to claim.

Gayle headed wide from another Jebb corner before Bradbrook had to be withdrawn through injury, to be replaced by Lloyd Macklin for his first appearance.

Barnes then tipped over Brown’s shot but Welling were soon on the attack again. Gayle was the instigator this time and Goldberg’s touch sent Macklin away but he shot wide of the near post.

Yet another Jebb free kick caused trouble and hit Gayle but went wide however the visitors had the last chance of the first half when Bentley tested Barnes with a low drive but the goalkeeper on loan from Colchester United was equal to it.

After the break, Soares curled wide from the edge of the area before Welling created another good opening. Joe Healy’s through ball was touched on perfectly by Jebb to send Goldberg one on one with Ward but the Hungerford goalkeeper was out quickly and smothered well.

Ward picked up a back pass on his bye-line allowing Jebb to drill in a free kick that evaded everyone when any touch would have put it in.

Once again, Healy and Jebb combined to give Goldberg a chance that Ward again saved.

Unsurprisingly, the visitors threw players forward in the last ten minutes and after Bentley and Luke Hopper came close, the latter reduced the arrears in the 90th minute when converting Callum Willmoth’s cross.

Deep into injury time, Welling had one last chance when he curled beyond the far post.
