Welling United 3-1 Oxford City

After losing two on the spin, Welling returned to winning ways with a solid second half display against Oxford City.

Although the first half was uneventful, Adam Coombes nabbed a brace after Kyran Wiltshire had cancelled out Connor Dymond’s opener.

Ultimately, Welling were worthy winners but they were made to work for it.

Quickest out of the blocks were the visitors and Eddie Jones fired across the face of goal before Joe Oastler was unable to find the target with a header. At the other end Rob Swaine did likewise from Sanchez Ming’s long free kick.

Swaine had a shout for a penalty before Anthony Cook was brought down on the edge of the penalty area but struck the wall with his free kick.

Bradley Goldberg had a shot turned around the post by Craig King before Jack Self shot over for Oxford on the counter attack.

Joe Anderson fired over from a tight angle from Ming’s deep cross before Gavin McCallum made space but didn’t get a clean hit and King saved easily.

When the second half started, Welling were again slow out of the blocks. Craig Fasanmade shot straight at Dan Wilks before Nana Owusu was greedy when shooting well over from out wide.

However, once Welling had settled, they created chances and Coombes came close with a free kick but King made a full length save.

Once again Coombes came close with a shot that was deflected over but Welling went ahead from the corner. After Swaine’s header came back to him, his shot across the face of the goal hit team-mate Connor Dymond and flew into the net.

Substitute Kyran Wiltshire had a great chance to level immediately but headed over when unmarked at the near post. However, it was Wiltshire who levelled for the Hoops. He combined well with Ashby before squeezing a prod beyond Wilks.

Within two minutes, Welling went back ahead when Ben Jefford brought down Aaran Cosgrave in the area and this time a penalty was awarded. Coombes took the responsibility and although King went the right way, he didn’t get near it.

This time there was no coming back and Welling looked for the third to kill the game off. Luke Rooney had a shot deflected over. Swaine then fired over before Coombes scored the clincher with five minutes remaining. Anderson split the defence with a ball that put Coombes behind and the Welling hit-man did what he does best and finished clinically.
