In a mid-season friendly in unfriendly weather, a Welling United squad made up of trialists defeated Bromley B, whose team consisted of players from their development squad.
With a fifteen day break between league games, Welling put on the game, partly so that their supporters could watch some football, and also to see how a group of trialists performed in competitive action. It was also useful for the Ravens to allow their young players to get some men’s football experience.
Early chances went to the Wings with a shot that was poked past the post and a side-footer that went wide. Bromley’s first opportunity came from a free kick that was hit into the defensive wall and a follow up that did not trouble Welling’s goalkeeper.
From a corner, a Welling defender headed over before he had problems at the other end. He was dispossessed by George Evans and as the striker burst into the penalty area, he went down under an attempt to tackle him but his claims for a penalty were turned away.
Then it was Welling’s turn to test the referee just after the half hour mark. A player was brought down in the area by Bromley’s goalkeeper but play was waved on, and when it fell to another Wing the goalkeeper brought him down too, This time a penalty was awarded and the Wings scored from the spot.
Both teams had chances before the break, Welling missing theirs and Bromley’s left side player testing the Welling goalkeeper who saved well.
At the interval, Welling made eight changes to Bromley’s one although the Ravens made several through the second half.
After a great save from the Bromley goalkeeper, Welling extended their lead in the ninth minute of the second period. A break into the penalty area was halted by a challenge deemed illegal by the referee and he again pointed to the spot. Although the goalkeeper guessed right and made a great save, he was powerless when another Welling player followed up to fire home.
Excellent Welling football ended with a shot that struck the post before they added a third with fifteen minutes remaining. If the second penalty appeared a little soft, there was no doubt about the third for a clear foul in the area. A third different Wing stepped up and made no mistake from the spot.
Overall, the Welling team, overseen by Kevin Watson, gave the Wings’ management some prospects of potential squad additions and it was also a worthwhile exercise for the Bromley players.
