Victory over Woking allowed Welling United to complete their first double in the Skrill Premier and helped to ease the pain of being the only team to lose a league game to Hyde this season.
In truth, this was as one sided as a game can be. Welling could easily have scored more whilst at the other end Lee Butcher didn’t have a significant save to make.
Despite the sale of England C international Fraser Franks on the day before, Welling’s defence looked solid whilst their midfield created far more than they had in the previous two games combined.
Kurtis Guthrie caused all sorts of problems on the right wing and created the first opening for Harry Beautyman who fired over.
Lee Clarke had two efforts on target but neither had the power to trouble Sam Beasant then referee Kevin Johnson had three occasions to brandish yellow cards, all of which were justified. Welling’s Doug Bergqvist was first to be booked and Woking’s Kieran Murtagh and John Goddard soon followed.
Beautyman smashed the crossbar from 20 yards following good work by Ross Lafayette before Guthrie had a self made opportunity brilliantly saved by Beasant.
If the game wasn’t already tricky for Woking, it got worse when Murtagh got himself sent off for a second bookable offence just before the break.
Bergqvist’s header from Beautyman’s corner was tipped onto the bar and over early in the second period, Lafayette shot over after Guthrie had created an opening then Beautyman hit a vicious swerving shot that was beaten out by Beasant.
Joe Healy opened the scoring in the 62nd minute when presented with a tap in following a fine low cross from the marauding Baily Cargill.
Despite a double substitution, Woking contributed to their own downfall when Mike Cestor bundled Guthrie over needlessly in the penalty area. Beasant did well to charge out Lafayette’s spot kick but Healy followed up to strike a difficult bouncing ball first time inside the far post.
Clarke put the icing on the cake for Welling with eight minutes remaining and they can now head to Gateshead on Tuesday evening with renewed confidence.
