Kyrell Lisbie scored a brace as Welling United finished their home campaign with victory over Hampton and Richmond Borough.
Both sides came into the game guaranteed to be safe from relegation, but with no chance of making the play-offs, so they used the opportunity to play fringe players and youngsters.
After a slow start, Kai McKenzie-Lyle saved low from Daniel Rowe’s free kick before Welling had their first clear cut chance. Lisbie’s shot was blocked into the path of debutant Sam Bayford and he drew a flying save out of Beavers’ goalkeeper, Endurance Johnson.
Bayford had another shot deflected wide before Cameron Andrews was off target when Hampton struggled to head out a corner. As half time approached Abel Vendrells-Parcerisa shot over.
Shortly after the break, Bayford came even closer when Johnson lost possession outside the penalty area and the young Welling player’s first time chip came back out off the post. However, Welling didn’t have long to wait before going ahead.
Bayford’s short corner gave Chi Ezennolim the opportunity to cross and he picked out Lisbie at the far post to head home.
Shane Dunne headed wide on a rare Hampton foray before Andrews drew a great save out of Johnson. However, the Beavers’ goalkeeper was beaten soon after. Lisbie was brought down just inside the penalty area and Dan Nkrumah made no mistake from the spot.
Ruaridh Donaldson had an opportunity to get Hampton back into the game when Sam Cox was adjudged to have fouled Adrian Clifton in the penalty area but McKenzie-Lyle read his intentions and made a solid save.
Five minutes remained when Welling completed the scoring. Christie Pattisson broke through and his powerful drive was beaten out by Johnson. It fell into the path of Lisbie and he made no mistake when firing home.
Warren Feeney gave his views afterwards saying: “It was a good run out for the boys. I wanted to give them a chance. Some of them were chomping at the bit but I gave them a chance today and I think that they’ve done themselves and the club proud.
“I thought young Sam was outstanding tonight with Cameron. I probably surprised a few by playing Paps (Antony Papadopoulos) at right back with Coxy in the middle but they applied themselves well”.
He was also complimentary towards the supporters who got behind the team: “It helps.” he confirmed.
“You could see the atmosphere when the boys were shooting down the hill tonight, the fans were outstanding tonight.”
