On a scorching day, newly promoted Worthing defeated Welling United to claim their first ever victory in the National League South.
Warren Feeney has put together a brand new squad and after ten players were awarded a first team debut in their previous game, five more were given their first start against Worthing.
It took just four minutes for the Rebels to go ahead. Joel Colbran crossed from the right and Callum Kealy swept it home.
Less than sixty seconds later, parity was restored. Medy Elito played it in from the right wing and found Tyrique Hyde and he finished confidently for Welling’s first goal of the season.
Kane Wills fired a long range shot that Myles Roberts held well, then Ollie Pearce shot on the turn, but it went wide. After nineteen minutes, Worthing regained the lead. Lewis White was given time to bring it down and his effort went through a crowded six yard box and into the net.
Six minutes later, Worthing extended their lead when Joe Rye got on the end of a deep free kick and headed home from close range.
Another five minutes passed before Welling reduced the arrears. Ade Azeez brought down an awkward ball well before his powerful drive gave Harrison Male no chance.
Azeez then crossed deep but Elito, under pressure, was unable to hit the target with his header.
Former Dartford striker Azeez came close to levelling when he hit another fierce shot, but Male tipped his shot onto the bar and over.
White sent Nordibek Bobomurodov away down the right-hand side, but Roberts saved his effort before he again found space on the right but shot over.
After the break, Pearce drove across the face of goal, but Kealy couldn’t finish, but he did score his second, and Worthing’s fourth, just short of the hour mark. White won possession on the right wing and played it into the penalty area for Kealy to finish well.
Stefan Payne squared for Welling substitute Ash Nzala. His first effort came back out off the legs of Male, but he couldn’t keep his follow up down and it flew over.
Surprisingly at four-two up, Worthing only left two at the back when they won a corner, despite Welling leaving two up, and they almost paid for it when the corner was cleared to Nzala. He burst away and skinned his man but fired over the near post.
Roberts had to be out quickly to thwart Kealy who burst through looking for his hat-trick before Welling again hit the bar when Payne’s shot clattered it.
That was Welling’s last chance, and they will be looking to bounce back quickly when they entertain Cheshunt on Tuesday evening.
