Jody Brown had squad problems of a difference for the visit of Alfreton Town to Welling United.
His previous games in charge of the Wings had been a struggle to find sixteen available players however, for the crucial match with the team from the East Midlands, he had enough players to have to make some tough decisions.
Veteran Darren Purse was given a Welling debut at the back whilst former Colchester United wide midfield player, Dominic Vose, also made his first start.
An Alfreton new signing, John Johnston, gave an early warning to Welling when collecting a Jonathan Henly clearance and dancing his way through two tackles before shooting over.
After eight minutes, the Reds went ahead. Jamal Fyfield brought down Johnston in the penalty area and, although Jonathan Henly went the right way, Bradley Wood’s penalty found its way into the bottom corner.
Vose fired wide for Welling and Gallagher had a shot deflected wide for a corner from which Welling came close.
Purse flicked on Vose’s corner and Charlie Penny’s first time shot went just wide.
Six minutes before half time, Welling conceded a second penalty when Purse caught Anthony Howell just inside the penalty area.
Penny had a shot blocked and Josh Carmichael fired wide as Welling tried to get back into the game before the break.
Aristide Bassele shot high from well out before Callum Howe headed wide at the other end.
Andi Thanoj had a shot saved well by Henly before the Reds increased their lead.
Lee Stevenson sent Karl Hawley away. Although Henly did well to block the initial shot, Hawley buried the replay.
Jason Mooney made a save from Welling substitute Rowan Vine and the Wings newcomer then crossed for another replacement, Reece Harris, to volley over.
Three minutes remained when Luke Graham was adjudged to have fouled Vose and Vine sent Mooney the wrong way from the spot kick.
Chris Bush pulled another one back deep into injury time but the damage was done and Welling were beaten.
