Welling United 2-2 Slough Town

Hopes of pulling away from the Vanarama National League South drop zone were dashed for Welling United when they were held by Slough Town.

Having been two up at the break, Welling had to settle for a point as they failed to build on a strong first half.

Once again, Rod Stringer’s team could have conceded early on. David Ogbonna had a shot that was parried by Rhys Lovett, an attempted clearance fell to Johnny Goddard, and his shot was kept out by an excellent save by the Wings’ goalkeeper.

After that, Welling had the better of things and Deon Moore headed over when Dan Martin’s corner was knocked back across goal to him.

In the twenty-seventh minute, Welling went ahead. Riccardo Di Trolio sent Moore away down the left and his unselfish low pass across the face of goal presented Scott Kashket with a tap in at the far post.

Just one minute later, Kashket scored again. Maxwell Statham found him down the right and clipped it over goalkeeper Charlie Horlock and inside the far post from a tight angle. He then had an opportunity to claim a hat-trick in under three minutes when he had an effort that was saved by Horlock.

Scott Davies, Slough’s player manager, brought himself on as a substitute in place of Dan Bayliss, who had taken a knock earlier. However, Welling finished the half strongly and missed a great chance to go three up just before half time. Dan Martin picked out Di Trolio with a corner but he failed to get a clean header on it and it skimmed beyond the far post.

Early in the second period, Dan Quick went on a cross-field run before sending Jayden Davis away down the left. He sent in a low cross and Gene Kennedy stabbed it just wide of the near post.

Ten minutes into the second half, the visitors pulled one back. Goddard sent over a free kick and Josh Jackman rose highest to head home.

There was almost an action replay a few minutes later when Goddard delivered another free kick from a similar position and Jackman again got on the end of it. Welling defended it better, this time, and it was deflected wide.

Although Slough then bombarded Welling with very direct football, the hosts defended well and Lovett had crosses and clearances to keep him active, but no shots to save. Goddard had a shot blocked and his follow up lob was too high.

Davies had a long throw knocked out to Edon Pruti whose drive was deflected over then the Rebels defender went up for a corner, and when it came to him he hooked it wide.

As the game moved into the last ten minutes, Henry Ochieng snatched at a shot that went so wide that it went out for a throw.

Six minutes remained when Slough levelled. A long pass forward was controlled expertly by Goddard allowing him to go round Lovett and slot home.

Jeanmal Prosper had a shot deflected by Dave Winfield to make the save easier for Lovett before Welling had a gilt-edged chance to claim the winner. They won a corner and Martin slung it in to Moore who was five yards out but he headed it straight at Horlock when a yard either side would have earned the Wings all three points.

Results elsewhere meant that Welling still remained outside the bottom four, but they will have felt that they missed a great opportunity to get further clear.
