Having enjoyed a late winner on Monday, Welling United suffered the opposite emotions when conceding an equaliser with two minutes remaining against Slough Town.
They had gone behind in the first ten minutes for the fourth time out of five games this season but came back well to go ahead only to end up dropping two points.
Bradley Stevenson shot wide early on but Slough went ahead in their first foray of the game. Joseph Lawal’s cross was only half cleared and it fell kindly for Aaron Kuhl to fire home from the edge of the penalty area.
Ben Allen looked to reply immediately but Jonathan North saved his shot from a tight angle
Dipo Akinyemi held up play well and used Allen’s run as a decoy to enable him to square to Stevenson but his shot flew wide.
At the other end, Guy Hollis’s long throws were Slough’s main weapon but Welling defended the majority of them well however, Tom Derry did manage to escape his marker once but headed wide,
Derry had another chance, heading over from Eitel Goueth’s corner before Welling finished the half strongly. Ade Shokunbi’s clever pass in behind, combined with Stevenson’s delicate first touch, gave him a great opportunity, but he slid it just beyond the far post.
However, after three shots off target, he found his range from outside the penalty area in first half injury time and North was powerless to keep it out.
Early in the second period, Welling came close to scoring when Che Krabbendam picked out Bradley Pearce from a free kick but he headed wide.
Krabbendam then sent Shokunbi away but he couldn’t get it in front of him and was crowded out. Soon after, Krabbendam sent another defence splitting pass through and Allen controlled it well, side stepping North’s rash charge out, before firing home beyond a desperate defender who was trying to cover.
George Hunt and Kuhl combined well to create an opening for Goueth, but he blasted over before he did better when played in by Lawal only for Murphy Maloney to make a fine save.
North saved from Akinyemi but Slough continued to search for an equaliser and did so when Ryan Bird headed home from Freddie Grant’s header with two minutes remaining.
Grant might have won it in the final minute of injury time but Mahoney made the save.
