Welling United 2-2 Cambridge United

Welling United and Cambridge United shared the points in an entertaining affair at Park View Road.Welling United

In their first home game in the Conference Premier for 14 years, Welling showed that they were more than capable of holding their own with full time former league teams.

Jack Obersteller was foiled by a brilliant Ian Miller block before Harrison Dunk shot wide for Cambridge.

Joe Healy had a header save before Cambridge went ahead through Ryan Donaldson’s shot that was deflected over Lee Butcher’s head by the unfortunate Alex Dyer.

Two minutes later, Ross Lafayette equalised when heading home a delicious corner from Obersteller and Welling’s late first half pressure was rewarded with a further goal.

After Alex Dyer had seen his shot saved by Chris Maxwell, Lee Clarke put Welling ahead with an unstoppable shot.

It took a brilliant Harrison Dunk header to stop Welling adding a third as Jake Gallagher looked to get onto the end of Lafayette’s inviting cross.

The second half was very open with chances at both ends.

Obersteller had a shot beaten out just beyond Dyer then a Cambridge cross came back off the near post.

Butcher saved from Miller before Miller was embarrassed by Lafayette who just failed to find the bottom corner.

Cambridge levelled when substitute Nathan Arnold went on a long run before firing under Butcher.

Fraser Franks almost put Welling back ahead but saw his shot fly away off the post but then had to make a crucial last ditch tackle to stop the impressive Donaldson.

Donaldson curled a late effort just over before Maxwell saved from Welling substitute Loick Pires as both sides searched for the late winner.
