After a long long wait, Welling finally claimed a hard earned win with victory over Woking.
Their last victory was back in October when they defeated Lincoln City 2-1 at Park View Road. That was also the last time they had score twice in a home game.
It was not an easy game, by any means, and Woking will rue hitting the woodwork three times in the first half.
However, Welling also had some great opportunities in the first half, none more than the stonewall penalty that was not given.
That was in the early minutes, when Sahr Kabba was tugged down in the penalty area.
Joey Jones was denied by a combination of Michael McEntegart and the crossbar then John Goddard’s free kick clipped the crossbar on the way over.
They paid for that when Welling went ahead from their next opportunity. Scott Kashket’s deep corner was met by a towering Kevin Lokko header that gave Jake Cole no chance in the Woking goal.
Goddard then got clear down the left but his near post effort struck the post and ran along the line, but was cleared by Ian Gayle.
Soon after, Goddard had to retire injured and a major threat to Welling was gone.
After that neither team created anything more in the first half.
Nine minutes into the second half, and Woking levelled. The two Robinsons combined well and Matt put in a low cross that Gayle could only knock in past his own goalkeeper at the near post.
Many teams in Welling’s situation would have folded but they came back with a vengeance.
Substitute Kadell Daniel was clattered into the hoardings by a rash challenge from already cautioned Joey Jones. After awaiting the referee giving him a final warning, Kashket delivered a free kick to the near post for Nortei Nortey to finish with a Vardy style flick at the near post.
Young Wings substitute Luke Saggers might have marked his debut with a third when Joey Taylor’s defence splitting pass put him away but Cole got down well to save.
Ibrahim Kargbo tested Cole before Giuseppe Sole should have done better but fired over.
After the game, Welling manager Dean Frost was happy that Welling had ended their bad run.
“I’m delighted with the three points. I’m delighted with the four points over the weekend. I think it’s a solid weekend with two solid performances.
“Today we’ve a pretty threadbare squad. Lokko is not fully fit but he’s given us 70/75 minutes and considering we’re very short in numbers, it’s a good three points.
“I think it’s a long time coming. I personally think in other performances and other games we’ve deserved more than what we’ve got.
“We fully deserved the point on Friday (at Eastleigh) and we fully deserved the three points today. It might not necessarily be on football but in endeavour, hard work and good attitude, and people fighting for the shirt and their team-mates and themselves, I think we are very united.”
