Charlie Penny’s first Welling United goal helped the home side to a victory over FC Halifax Town on Saturday afternoon.

FOOTBALL (WELLING HOME)

In the opening exchanges, the visitors looked dangerous and Simon Ainge headed over from Adam Smith’s corner before Smith himself came close when making space for himself before firing over.

Having survived the early exchanges Welling had their chances and Sam Corne twice came close. First he fired an effort from a half cleared free kick that went wide then he stretched to reach a Malachi Hudson cross but could not guide it goalwards.

Jamie Day earned himself a booking for a mistimed tackle and Smith again found Ainge with the free kick but his header was saved easily by Benji Buchel.

Jamal fired came close for Welling and Richard Peniket did likewise for the visitors before Lois Maynard went wide after Buchel appeared to be blocked  off.

Three minutes before the break, Welling went ahead when Harry Beautyman’s corner was headed back across goal by Hudson for Aristide Bassele to head home.

FOOTBALL (WELLING HOME)

Bassele might have scored again moments later when heading over another Hudson cross before the Shaymen stunned the Wings with a stoppage time equaliser through Maynard’s long distance header.

It took four second half minutes for Welling to regain their lead when the impressive Hudson sent Fyfield away and his low cross was tucked away by Penny.

Two minutes later, Matty Pearson made the Shaymen’s task that much harder by getting himself sent off for stamping.

FOOTBALL (WELLING HOME)

Neil Aspen made a double change and Marc Roberts headed over a Paul Marshall corner. Roberts, whose long throws worried Welling at the Shay Stadium earlier in the season, hurled in another that Maynard headed wide.

Barney Williams’ cross was headed over by Bassele as Welling tried to make the most of the extra man, then Beautyman’s shot was fumbled by Matt Glennon but nobody was on hand to finish.

Substitute Kieron St. Aimie could have put the game beyond the Shaymen but headed wide from Hudson’s cross.

Although Jamie Jackson and Scott Boden both had late chances for the visitors, Welling were good value for their win and might have embellished the score line but Beautyman’s injury time shot was saved by Glennon.
