Having not won since the opening day before Saturday, Welling United claimed their second victory in four days in an entertaining game against Chester.
Wings manager, Loui Fazakerley, likes his team to come out quickly to try and grab the game but it was the visitors who enjoyed the best of the first twenty minutes.
John Rooney had a shot pushed wide by the diving Tom King, before launching another effort that was deflected wide.
Tom Shaw burst through but was stopped by a last ditch tackle then Ross Hannah headed over a Jordan Chapell corner when well placed.
Captain Ricky Wellard was the main architect of Welling’s attacks after they had seen out a difficult opening phase. First he played George Porter in but Jon Worsnop saved well.
Then Wellard went wide with a bicycle kick before he again combined well with Porter before his low shot went wide.
Craig Hobson looked certain to score for Chester at the far post but Nortei Nortey made a crucial challenge.
Ben Jefford finished at the far post but Porter was adjudged offside when flicking on Xavier Vidal’s free kick.
Hannah hit the post with an overhead effort then Chapell shot wide before Welling went ahead.
Vidal split the Cestrians defence with a perfect pass to Reece Harris. His first touch wasn’t great but his exquisite chip gave Worsnop no chance.
After the break, Welling were the better team although Chester still created some openings.
Wellard’s shot was fumbled round the post unconvincingly by Worsnop then Jefford had a header cleared off the line by Johnny Hunt.
Kevin Lokko headed wide before another Wellard shot was beaten out by Worsnop.
Once again, Wellard worked his way into a shooting position but curled wide.
Worsnop made a fine save from Vidal’s shot, but Wellard got the goal he deserved from the corner. Harry Lee’s delivery was good, but Worsnop should have done better, and when he spilled it, Wellard was on hand to bundle it home.
Chester came back and Hannah again hit the woodwork before claiming a consolation goal moments before the final whistle.
“That was the most important thing, to get back to back wins” said Fazakerley. “The worry after such a good away win was that the lads might get a bit complacent.”
“We came out and it was a very good second half performance. It was a shame we couldn’t hold onto the clean sheet. That’s what’s been missing.”
