Two tough wins in a week have pushed Welling United up into sixth place in the Skrill Premier.
Despite his impressive performance at Braintree on Tuesday, player-manager Jamie Day chose to leave himself out and restore Jake Gallagher to the starting line up following his one match suspension.
In the early stages, Lee Clarke’s ariel prowess caused Tamworth problems. Having already headed a Loick Pires cross over, Clarke then nodded wide from corners by Alex Dyer and Jack Obersteller.
Pires then shot wide after being sent away by Obersteller before both teams clattered the opposition’s crossbar in the space of a few minutes.
Lateef Elford-Alliyu saw his effort tipped onto the woodwork by Wings’ custodian Lee Butcher then a Dyer corner was headed against the Tamworth bar by Baily Cargill.
Another Pires shot was saved by Cameron Belford before Butcher saved from Lloyd Kerry.
Both goalkeepers were in action again when Belford saved Dyer’s free kick then Butcher pushed away a powerful effort from Elford-Alliyu.
Belford made the final save of the half when getting down well to knock away Healy’s drive from a tight angle.
After a slow start to the second period, Belford was called into action again when saving from Pires following a knock down from Kurtis Guthrie then Butcher did well at the other end in saving from Andy Todd.
Former Gillingham full back Jack Evans, who also had loan spells with Welling and Dartford, was on the end of a crunching tackle by Gallagher. Evans was carried off on a stretcher whilst Gallagher’s return from his ban was marked with another caution.
Once again, the crossbar was rapped, this time by a crashing shot from Guthrie via the fingertips of Belford.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 63rd minute when despite the warnings early on, Clarke was able to rise to head home a Guthrie cross.
There were few further alarms for Welling who made the game safe with eight minutes remaining. A fine flowing movement saw Cargill break down the wing and cross for Pires to hit home first time.
