Tuesday night football again proved profitable for Welling United as they claimed their second victory of the season with a comfortable win over Lincoln City.
Coming into the game, Lincoln had scored freely not having failed to score since the opening game. Meanwhile Welling had not recorded a clean sheet all season.
Taking that into account, tremendous credit should go to the Wings’ defence as goalkeeper Jonathan Henly was not called upon to make a save of note.
Three points were vital to Welling and the win shot them out of the bottom three and up to eighteenth.
In the early stages Tobi Sho-Silva and Tyrone Marsh both came close with shots from the edge of the area before the former got free and brought down an awkward ball skilfully but could not apply the finishing touch.
Harry Beautyman’s dead ball deliveries caused problems and the opening goal came from one of his free kicks. Chaos at the back saw the ball drop loose and Jake Gallagher was on hand to notch his first goal of the season.
After Alan Power shot wide for Lincoln, Sho-Silva again breached the Lincoln defence and only a last gasp tackle by Arnaud Mendy kept the Wings at bay.
It looked as though the reprieve may be short lived when Jamal Fyfield’s powerful header drew a brilliant reaction save from Nick Townsend. The ball broke back out wide to Beautyman whose cross was deflected onto the inside of the post and out.
Early in the second half, Sho-Silva had to be replaced by Joe Healy, then another change saw Sam Corne come on for Zach Fagan.
Marsh fired wide for Welling then Jordan Burrow did likewise for Lincoln before Malchi Hudson’s whipped in ball came back off the post.
Ben Jefford came close as Welling searched for the security of a second goal and that came in the 76th minute.
Once again, Marsh showed skill and tenacity to break through a clumsy challenge before firing low into the bottom corner.
Hudson then chipped just over with the back-pedalling Townsend beaten but this proved to be the youngster’s last action of the evening for the Wings as he was withdrawn to allow Loui Fazakerley a taste of the action. The Wings’ longest serving player almost made an immediate impact but his effort was tipped wide by Townsend.
Wings’ manager Jamie Day will be keen to build upon the success as his team look to push on into mid-table.
