Just under 2,000 spectators saw the Wings claim the three points with victory over their local rivals and fellow play-off hopefuls.
With the closeness of the two teams in miles and in league places along with the fact that there were players who had played for both teams, it was unsurprising that there were some feisty challenges but the game did not boil over excessively.
Chances were few and far between in the first half as the Dartford midfield stifled Welling, but the best of those that there were fell to the Wings.
Danny McNamara, back for his second loan spell, almost picked out Danny Mills early on but Bailey Vose claimed well. Then Caden Genovesi’s long free kick caused havoc in the Darts defence and Josh Hill’s header back across the face of goal picked out Mills but his attempt at a spectacular volley was well off target.
Another dead ball delivery caused problems for Dartford’s defence and Hill was again in the thick of it with a volley that went straight into the ground then ballooned up for Vose to claim.
Nassim L’Ghoul headed wide from a Mills cross and it looked as though Dartford were going to see the half out until Hill rose at the far post to power home L’Ghoul’s corner.
At the break, the Dartford management made a change and replaced Jordan Wynter with Charlie Sheringham to go to a 4-4-2 formation.
Immediately after the interval, Welling might have gone two up. Bradley Goldberg found Mills and he spun and fired his shot just wide from a great position.
It was then Goldberg’s turn to have an effort with a twenty yard curler that Vose dived to save. Then L’Ghoul went on a surging run before letting fly from twenty five yards but it went just wide of the post.
Finally, Dan Wilks was tested when Lee Noble registered Dartford’s first meaningful shot on target but the Welling keeper saved comfortably.
Andre Coker replaced Ryan Hayes and immediately Dartford posed a greater threat however, as they were chasing the game, Welling had opportunities on the counter attack and Gavin McCallum shot wide after the Darts’ defence had forced L’Ghoul, Goldberg and Mills to pass by blocking their routes to goal.
Coker shot just wide for Dartford from the edge of the area before Welling missed a golden opportunity. McCallum found Goldberg and his shot was touched onto the post by Vose. It came back to McCallum who picked out Mills but his close range header went wide.
Ben Greenhalgh went on a powerful run and shook off a foul before steadying himself but he sliced his shot well wide.
On eighty-three minutes, Welling scored the crucial second. John Paul Kissock went on a run and his low cross was parried by Vose to Mills who lifted it over the prone goalkeeper and into the net from six yards.
Elliott Bradbrook headed wide from a Noble cross then Greenhalgh shot across the face of goal as Dartford refused to give up.
Daniel Johnson fired over from twenty yards and they had one last chance when Coker’s shot deep into injury time came back off the post.
