Jamie Day’s Welling United finished their pre-season campaign with a morale boosting victory over a Brentford development XI.
After four consecutive wins, the Wings were pegged back with defeats at Cheshunt and at home to Millwall’s development side, but responded well against the Bees.
Captain Jake Gallagher scored both goals and the defence, with three of the starting back four new to the club, showed a growing understanding underlined by keeping a clean sheet.
Now Jamie Day can start to prepare for next week’s opening game against newly promoted AFC Telford United.
Rod Young came close for the Wings early on when his deflected cross clipped the near post then Ben Jefford’s corner found Gallagher whose header was saved by Jack Bonham.
Lee Butcher made a good save from Sadie Miji, who had broken through well before Bonham made an outstanding save at the other end from Charlie Gorman.
Malik Ounai was forced off injured in the 21st minute and was replaced by Kevin Krans, one of two Welling trialists released by Bristol City.
Kieron St. Aimie chipped an effort having seen Bonham off his line but could not keep his attempt under the bar.
At the other end Louis Hutton sent Jack Mulreany away and his cross was flicked on by Miji. Butcher was alert, however, and rushed out to claim at the feet of Tyrell Miller Rodney.
Two minutes remained in the half when Welling went ahead.
Krans broke through and his shot took a minor deflection before being pushed out by Bonham. Gallagher’ following up, made no mistake and smashed the loose ball home.
Loui Fazakerley came close to extending Welling’s lead just after the break when Loui Fazakerley’s chipped cross-shot flew just over the angle of bar and far post.
Gallagher scored his and Welling’s goal in the 54th minute. Sam Corne slung in a deep corner that was nodded back by Jamal Fyfield for Gallagher to finish.
Fazakerley had a shot well blocked for a corner before Butcher made an outstanding save from Arron Green.
Zain Westbrooke and Jermaine Udumaga had shots for Brentford before another former Bristol City player, Ozzy Adeniji was denied by a good save by Bonham.
Barney Williams fired just over for Welling in the final minute as the Wings ran out as worthy winners.
