Leyton Orient proved too strong for Welling United as they burst into a first half four goal lead.Welling United

David Mooney’s two goal salvo in the 4th and 14th minutes put the visitors in control and Welling struggled to contain them in the first thirty five minutes.

Dean Cox added a third in the 31st minute and Welling’s woes were compounded by an injury to goalkeeper Sam Mott.

Mott’s replacement, trialist Jakime Vernon, hadn’t even had the chance to get the feel of the ball before he was picking it out of the back of the net as Shaun Batt converted Harry Lee’s perfectly weighted through ball.

Loick Pires almost pulled one back just before half time but his effort went just beyond the far post.

Former O Pires did notch his first goal back with Welling, following a year at Woking, early in the second period. Kurtis Guthrie did well down the right wing and his low cross gave Pires a tap in at the far post.

The struggles of the first half were put behind them as Welling put in a much better performance after the break.

Jake Gallagher, Guthrie, Joe Healy and Ross Lafayette all came close to reducing the arrears further before a series of substitutions caused the game to become disjointed.

Ex-Charlton Athletic striker Kevin Lisbie had a couple of late chances. First he was foiled by a fine tackle by Doug Bergqvist then he failed to beat Blaine Hudson who made a good clearance off the goal-line.

Having played three home games in six days, Welling now prepare for a week of travel around Kent visiting Tonbridge Angels on Tuesday, Thamesmead Town on Thursday and Margate next Saturday.
